How to Find a Vacant Berth in a Running Train

Train already departed or about to leave? Here is how to find real empty berths coach-wise and request official allotment from the Ticket Examiner (TTE).

Can You Legally Board a Train Without a Confirmed Seat?

According to Indian Railways Commercial Rules:

  • RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation): You are guaranteed travel rights and a sitting berth (Side Lower). You can board legally and approach the TTE for a full sleeper berth as soon as one opens up.
  • Counter Waiting List Ticket: If you purchased a physical waiting ticket from a railway station counter, you are legally permitted to board sleeper/general coaches and ask the TTE for vacancy allotment.
  • Online E-Ticket Waitlist: If your online IRCTC e-ticket does not confirm in the final chart, it is auto-cancelled. You cannot board on an auto-cancelled e-ticket.

How to Approach the TTE for Vacant Seat Allotment

Don't just walk up to the TTE blindly asking "Koi seat khali hai kya?". Use RailSeatGap first:

  1. Open RailSeatGap on your mobile browser.
  2. Search your train number and today's date.
  3. Check the exact coach (e.g. B4, Berth 26) marked as vacant for your destination.
  4. Show your valid counter/RAC ticket to the TTE and politely mention: "Sir, Coach B4 Berth 26 is vacant after Agra. Could you please allot it to me with excess fare ticket (EFT)?"

Always Ask for an Official Receipt (EFT)

When a TTE allots you a vacant berth onboard, Indian Railways rules require the TTE to punch the allotment into their electronic Handheld Terminal (HHT) and print an official Excess Fare Ticket (EFT) receipt. Never pay cash without receiving an official receipt.
